The author has been dealing with the subject of "whales" since 1990. When she first saw the large mammals in the ocean off the coast of Massachusetts and Maine in 1993, her enthusiasm for these animals was unstoppable. After that, Ms. Thomas decided to get her children interested in the subject of whales. Whales are still hunted by some nations, killed for sport and fall victim to improper fishing methods or sonar experiments. However, the author wanted to arouse enthusiasm and not present children with the partly cruel truth. According to the motto: Only what you know, you can love and what you love, you want to protect! The unbroken enthusiasm for dinosaurs shows that one can know and love an animal species without having seen it live. That is why the author is strictly against keeping marine mammals in captivity.
She therefore developed her own lecture, which explains in a child-friendly way what a whale is and what species of whale there are.
With this in mind, she also developed her first children's book. It was to be a book that would primarily entertain children, but at the same time impart a great deal of knowledge. These were the first adventures of the killer whale Zabu. Neither in the lecture nor in her children's books there are brutal or cruel elements. To ensure that the pictures were technically correct, Ms. Thomas illustrated the story herself with numerous oil paintings and drawings. Zabu was finally published in 2005 by the publishing house at ESTE. In the meantime there are 5 volumes with exciting adventures and many whale and dolphin species.
The fascination for these animals is nourished by ever new experiences. In the meantime, Ms. Thomas has observed humpback whales, sperm whales, fin whales, minke whales, round-headed dolphins, gray whales, orcas, sei whales, small orcas, belugas, harbor porpoises, white-sided dolphins, common dolphins, pilot whales, two-toothed whales, bottlenose dolphins and even the largest animal on earth, the blue whale. Most of her trips so far have taken her to the Azores, where up to 24 different species of whales and dolphins can be seen throughout the year.
But other animals are also the subject of her book projects. For example, the book "Adventure Blackbird Rescue" was based on a true incident and, as she says herself, fell into the author's lap, so to speak.
In 2010, the English version of the novel "Through the Eyes of the Orcas" was released on the international market.
The children's book "Dolphin in Need" was honored with a foreword by Academy Award and Bamboo Award winner Richard O'Barry and an afterword by Dr. Ingrid N. Visser honored.
The theme of dolphins and captivity is also reflected in the children's books "Selina and the Sad Dolphin" (ages 6 and up) and in the exciting fantasy story "Mark and the Mysterious Dolphin" (ages 8 and up).
The most extensive illustrations to date are in the children's book "Elephant child Malla in the Savannah", which reached 17th place in the Lovelybooks competition among all children's books published in 2016. Since September 2020, there is a German audio play to this children's book with African drum sounds and various speakers and speakers as well as some animal and nature sounds for download.
