Michael Kirwan

Michael Kirwan [1953-2018] an American artist, writer, photographer, and raconteur.

He was born in New York City on December 27th, 1953. He began drawing around age 4-5 and grew into a budding miscreant and atheist.

In adulthood around 1985, Michael found himself working at the St. Marks Bathhouse in the East Village which provided inspiration for his art. Soon, he had his drawings published in STROKE magazine. Over the years, he produced hundreds of illustrations and comix for dozens of titles for Mavety Media, Dugent Publications, Liberation Publication and many more. Ultimately, Michael became a recognized master in the field of erotic art.

After living in Miami Beach for a dozen years, he left under a cloud of dubious suspicion and made his home in Los Angeles. There, Michael was the first Artist-in-Residence for the Tom of Finland Foundation, named Artist-of-the-Year (2004), and was inducted into the Erotic Artist Hall of Fame.

The vanishing adult magazine industry mysteriously abandoned soliciting his input in the mid-2000s, but he continued making a living selling original artwork from his website to enlightened collectors worldwide.

In 2011, a handsome monograph of Michael’s work was published as “Just So Horny” and included decades of stimulating art. Also in 2011, Michael illustrated the book “Backwoods” by Natty Soltesz which is a horny novel of rural men seeking sex in a small town.

Michael Kirwan passed away on May 26, 2018.

During his lifetime, Michael's art, writings, and photography were published in over 700 different gay and straight adult magazines like PlayGuy, Gent, Freshmen, Torso, Stroke, Inches, Nugget, Big Women, Mandate, Plumpers, Honcho, BadPuppy, Allboy, Red Tails, Cavalier, Powerplay, and many others. The characters Michael drew were front and center, but Michael gave them life in a rich and colorful environment he painted on paper as he created the elaborate backstories and adventures to accompany the images.

In 2026, an amazing collection of Michael's monthly comic series from over six years were curated together under a single cover in the book "Just So Horny Comix."
