Worked in the Military Operations Research Industry, then taught at The University of The District of Columbia for 34 years. Computer Science and Mathematics. I must have liked it or else I am seriously lacking in imagination.

Serious interest in the popularization of science at a non-trivial level.

When we tell students and potential students that "science" is easy we are doing them a very serious disservice. When they discover that "to learn" represents an active verb and that it is not easy they tend to decide that it is not for them. If it were easy where would the victory be in learning and understanding?

When we encourage a young person to search for a profession or activity on the basis of "easy" they will discover that nothing valuable is really easy they are then likely to do nothing valuable.
