Wayne A. Woodward

Wayne Woodward is Professor Emeritus of Statistical Science at Southern Methodist University (SMU). He joined the faculty in 1974 and spent most of his academic career at SMU with the exception of two years during which time he was a member of the Biostatistics faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. At SMU he twice served as chair of the Department of Statistical Science, 1990-1996 and 2006-2016, the longest service of any Statistical Science department chair. The Statistical Science Department’s Ph.D. program in Biostatistics which is offered in conjunction with UT Southwestern as well as its professional Master’s program were realized under his leadership.

Professor Woodward’s research in time series analysis – on which he supervised 21 Ph.D. students – helped establish SMU as a national leader in this field. He has published 77 refereed research articles and 5 books, and has received SMU’s highest recognitions for teaching, research, and and service. In 2006 he was named SMU's United Methodist Scholar/Teacher of the Year. Woodward has also received the Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor Award, the Sigma Xi Research Award, and the Tunks Distinguished University Citizen Award. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the highest and most highly competitive award bestowed by the Association on its members. He also received the Don Owen Award, given annually by the San Antonio Chapter of the ASA recognizing excellence in teaching, research, and consulting.
