J. Mark Shoup grew up in small town in west central Kansas. A Vietnam veteran, he worked as a farm and ranch hand, milkman, factory worker, overhead crane operator, bartender, lifeguard, and wholesale hardware salesman before settling on carpentry. He pounded nails for many years in various parts of the U.S., but mostly in the Sunflower State. He also earned masters degrees in creative writing and English from Wichita State University. After completing his graduate degrees, he worked as a technical writer for Boeing Computer Services in Wichita, Kansas. Since 1989, he has been associate editor of Kansas Wildlife & Parks magazine and has contributed hundreds of articles to that publication, as well as others.
He loves the outdoors and spending time with his wife, Rose, on their 13-acre "farm" in southcentral Kansas. His proudest accomplishment in life is raising two fine young men, their sons, Logan and Will.
Oracle of the Flying Badger is his first novella, and a sequel is in the works.
