David Hale Sylvester has given over one million hugs across 50 states and 42 countries.
What started as a 4,200-mile bike ride to honor his friend Kevin Bowser—who died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001—became a 25-year mission to prove that real strength includes tenderness, and that connection isn't weakness.
David has cycled from Cairo to Cape Town, Istanbul to Beijing, and across North America multiple times. Along the way, he hugged strangers in homeless shelters, disaster sites, domestic violence centers, small-town diners, and everywhere in between. His 2008 ESPN story garnered over 2 million hits.
He is the author of Traveling at the Speed of Life (2011), One Hug at a Time (2021), and the Brothers in Arms series: Real Men Hug (2025), Big, Black, and Scary (2026), and Love's Pursuit (2026). His work has been featured on ESPN, in Essence Magazine, and in curricula at universities including Yale, CSUN, and Alvernia University.
David is a Guggenheim Fellow finalist, TEDx speaker, and the developer of the EMBRACE methodology—a living framework for accountability, connection, and hope. He facilitates workshops and retreats for men's groups, universities, veteran organizations, and corporate teams.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, David is the son of esteemed Pennsylvania University Professor Samuel Sylvester and wife Theresa. When not on the road, he can be found in a Philadelphia café, making friends and spreading kindness.
Brothers in Arms: Better men, better lives, better world.
