Jan Dobbs Barton was born in Nacogdoches, Texas in the 1950's. She is a descendant of Antonio Gil Y'Barbo, who founded Nacogdoches.
Jan graduated from Nacogdoches High School and Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Business Degree in Accounting. She has worked as an accountant for 37 years, the last 35 for the same company.
Jan's hobbies include freelance photography, family and school history, social media group page management, and interior decorating. She is on the boards of directors for several non-profits including Women's Symphony League, American Cancer Society, and the Arc. She has had photographs published in People Magazine, Country Weekly Magazine, and on Barry Manilow's website. Most recently she served as still photographer for a documentary film Earl Hamner Storyteller. She is a frequent writer for her hometown newspaper The Daily Sentinel, as well as The Tyler Morning Telegraph.
Jan is a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Daughters of the Confederacy.
Her family research led her to her co-author Peggy Arriola Jasso, and they collaborated on one history book and are looking at other projects.
She is married, with four children, and two grandchildren. She and her husband have known each other since 7th grade at Thomas J. Rusk Junior High School in Nacogdoches. They also have five beloved cats.
