Michael R. Dove

Michael R. Dove (B.A., Northwestern University; M.A., Ph.D., Stanford University) is the Margaret K. Musser Professor of Social Ecology, Professor of Anthropology, Curator of Anthropology in the Peabody Museum of Natural History, and Co-Coordinator of the joint doctoral degree program between F&ES and the Department of Anthropology.

His most recent books are “Bitter Shade: The Ecological Challenge of Human Consciousness” (Yale University Press, 2021), "Climate Cultures: Anthropological Perspectives on Climate Change" (coedited with Jessica Barnes, Yale University Press 2015); “Science, Society, and Environment: Applying Physics and Anthropology to Sustainability” (coauthored with Daniel M. Kammen, Routledge 2015); and The Anthropology of Climate Change: A Historical Reader (editor, Wiley/Blackwell, 2014). Forthcomng in January 2024 is his next book, “Hearsay Is Not Excluded: A History of Natural History”, with Yale University Press. He is working on a new book on Volcanic Hazard, Human Society, and Climatic Perturbation.

Other current research and teaching interests include the anthropology of climate change and the cultural and political aspects of natural hazards, disasters, and resource degradation; indigenous environmental knowledge and practice; the study of developmental and environmental institutions, discourses, and movements; the history and sociology of the environment related sciences; multispecies ethnography; and ethnicity & museeology. Professor Dove holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University”.

Professor Dove also sits on the advisory boards of Yale's Agrarian Studies Program, Council on Southeast Asian Studies, the International Affairs Council, and the Tropical Resources Institute.
