Aya Gruber

Aya Gruber is a law professor at the University of Colorado and an expert on criminal law and violence against women. A lifelong feminist, former public defender, and survivor, she has personally and professionally grappled with the issue of feminism’s influence on criminal justice for decades. With her debut monograph, The Feminist War on Crime, Gruber seeks to engage the new generation of feminists who care deeply about #MeToo and gender justice but oppose racist policing and mass incarceration. The first book to detail the history American feminism’s contribution to mass incarceration, it is an important resource on carceral feminism. Gruber is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley and Harvard Law School and has previously taught at Harvard Law School and the University of Iowa. Gruber has written for the New York Times, Slate, and the New York Daily News and has appeared on broadcast media, including PBS, CBS, ABC.
