Stephen C. Propes

Stephen C. Propes has been collecting and researching L.A. music since college and has written 7 books on the subject, including the first book on rare rock & roll record collecting. From 1981 through 1989, he was an R&B DJ on KLON in the L.A. market as well as hosting the Steve Propes Rock and Roll House Party on Long Beach cable TV and has interviewed hundreds of performers and others involved in the music. He has also written catalog descriptions for rare record auction house Good Rockin' Tonight in Orange County. He and his wife Sylvia have been married since 1965 and they have two daughters, Heather and Shea and two grandchildren. They have lived in Long Beach since 1968 and currently he is a free-lance reporter for the Long Beach Beachcomber as well as writing a regular police blotter column. The most recent book about records by Stephen C. Propes and Jim Dawson is "45 RPM: The History, Heroes and Villains of a Pop Music Revolution" published by Back Beat in 2003. Several of his books, "What Was the First Rock & Roll Record" written with Jim Dawson and "L.A. Vocal Groups and Duets 1945 to 1965" written with Galen Gart are currently sought after by collectors and researchers and have sold in the aftermarket for well beyond original retail price. With any luck, "Old School" will be in similar demand, though constantly available.
