Mary graduated from Michigan State University with honors and received a master's degree in education from Wayne State University. After retiring as a special education teacher in the Lamphere School District in Michigan, she worked at Oakland Community College in the ESL Department. Mary has published with numerous national and Michigan newspapers including the Observer and Eccentric Newspapers, the Oakland Press, the Detroit Free Press, the Royal Oak Daily Tribune, the Dearborn Press and Guide, the Detroiter, and Michigan Living. Beginning in 1979, she covered historical and cultural events in Emmet County for the Petoskey News-Review. For the opening program book for the Detroit Opera House, she wrote an article about the historic building in downtown Detroit. Mary served on the board of Petoskey's Little Traverse Historical Society and is on the Board of Trustees for the Detroit Opera. She has been a frequent presenter at various historical societies and museums throughout Michigan.
Mary is a Level 2 PSIA Certified Alpine Ski Instructor and has taught at Boyne Highlands, Taos Ski School (New Mexico)., and the Blizzard Ski School. She teaches full time at Pine Knob Ski and Snowboard School.
