Julian Merrow-Smith (1959-) was born in rural Buckinghamshire and spent his childhood roaming the Chiltern Hills above the village of Chinnor in Oxfordshire. After attending Lord Williams School, Thame he left early to attend art school in Banbury and then Wolverhampton. He was selected for 'The New Contemporaries' at the ICA, London and the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London, and has shown with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. In 1998 he moved to Provence and in 2005 started his Painting a Day project, Postcard from Provence' which has received praise from the New York Times, The Times and The Guardian. His work is held in collections in over 16 countries. He lives and works in the South of France with his wife the writer and cellist, Ruth Phillips.
