My mom became mentally ill when I was about twelve. I became interested in medicine because I naively wanted to try to save her and people with her problems. During my studies, I found that I excelled at activities that involved my hands, such as procedures, neurosurgery, and general surgery. However, these were still male-dominated fields, which made me uncomfortable. Then I discovered that being an ob-gyn would allow me to do surgery in a field surrounded by women. With gynecology, I help women with their general health; with obstetrics, I have the exciting benefit of delivering babies. My other jobs—as mother and wife—are just as rewarding as the thrill of being an ob-gyn. The daily love and joy from my eight-yearold son, Ryan, and nineteen-month-old daughter, Kylie, make me a better doctor, able to more deeply understand the importance of healthy babies and families. Bob, my husband of thirteen years, has been by my side since I met him in college, cheering me on when I was accepted into medical school and seeing me through the long hours of residency and private practice. Without his dedication as a husband and father, I would not be able to do what I do every day. I believe exercise and staying fit are keys to a healthy and productive life, so in my limited spare time, I am a runner, hiker, spinner, and “boot camp” addict. I love to cook and garden; feeding family and friends fresh, delicious, and healthy home-cooked meals is another of my passions. I also find the time to volunteer at my son’s elementary school teaching gardening and science. Along with Allison and Alane, I am committed to sharing our talents by providing women’s health care and education to the underserved and financially struggling women of Los Angeles through the Mommy Docs Foundation.
