I am a Professor of Social Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. My research focuses on population, stratification, and kinship in China, and in comparative and historical perspective. One recent area we focused is the role played by lineages and other kin groups in creating and sustaining patterns of social and economic inequality. For this research, my collaborators and I have constructed and analyzed large demographic databases from historical Chinese sources such as population registers and genealogies. We are currently working on new projects involving big data on the careers of Qing officials and educated elites and professionals in the Republican era.
