Anne & Mike Poe have been adventure traveling since they met and married in Hawaii in 1970. At the time, Mike was building a catamaran with plans to sail around the world. Although that dream did not come to fruition, it laid the cornerstone for their adventures to come. They have skied glaciers in British Columbia, kayaked class V whitewater, canoed for months at a time in amazing wilderness areas including the arctic, bicycled thousands of miles through strange cultures and languages, and hiked some of the most thrilling places in the world. They traveled at the local level. They squeezed it all in between working; they prioritized travel and adventure over monetary gain and job stability long before it was acceptable to have a diversified resume.
Anne started writing, photographing, and publishing stories of their journeys in numerous magazines in the 80's. It was tougher to get published in the late 90's; editors wanted someone to die before the story would sell. But, they kept writing of their amazing adventures, including a book called On Our Own: A Bicycling Adventure through SE Asia which is sold on Amazon.com in print and Kindle versions.
In the meantime, they wrote their first hiking guide; Crested Butte Colorado: 60 Scenic Day Hikes. After spending 3 summers hiking, photographing and researching the area, they knew they had to write their own guide; existing books were simply too limited in scope for the quality hiking available.
The Crested Butte book was a huge success. Hikers had never before seen a book so rich in detail, with color photography and color topographical maps, yet so simple to use. It sold out the first summer. Crested Butte Colorado 65 Scenic Day hikes appeared the following summer: five new trails, new maps and a revision to the original format that is now the staple for all their books.
Anne and Mike decided to write a guide for Silverton and Ouray Colorado, another favorite hiking area of theirs. This new book is now available on Amazon.com and in local stores. Southwest Colorado: High Country Day Hikes sold over 600 copies in the first two weeks of availability. Another first of its kind with excellent maps and easy to use format, all color photographs. Check it out. It is not your typical black & white, prose hiking guide.
Summer of 2012 was very busy as the Poe's finished the research for their third and fourth books: Southwest Colorado High Country Day Hikes:Telluride, and Utah National Parks Arches & Canyonlands Day Hikes. Available on Amazon.com and in local stores & REI.
