Prosper E. Sanchez

Prosper Emilio Sánchez

January 12, 1966 - August 28, 2011

He lives on through his art and poetry.....

He was born in the Dominican Republic and migrated to the United States as an infant  with his mother and father and his older  brother Fernando Arturo in order to seek medical attention due to a congenital illness.   His brother lost the battle and passed away at the age of 10.  Prosper survived and went on to live what many consider the American dream of opportunity.

Like his father, he studied medicine.  Even though he had many health issues and physical limitations, he graduated from Osteopathic Medicine  in 1995 and practiced as an internist in the suburbs of Baltimore, MD, until his career was cut short due to his declining health.  In 2005 he then moved back with  his family and his two dogs in historic Cambridge, MD, on the banks of the Choptank River.  Although he retired from his practice, he always kept up to date on his profession and was frequently consulted by friends and family, who trusted his medical advice.

Despite the health and physical challenges that he faced, Prosper had an enormous love for life.  He accepted his condition with dignity, grace and joy.  He loved to receive visits and had an admirable capacity to relate to people, whether it was a family, friend, a professional, an older person or a child, always' with humility and desire to help.

But medicine was not Prosper's only gift.  As one person mentioned,  Prosper "was a doctor with a flare for art". Not only did he paint on canvass, but also had a great talent for crafts.  He created many beautiful pieces of glass mosaic and jewelry.

He had written many scientific papers and journal articles, but never poetry or prose.   "I began writing poetry accidentally when a friend introduced me to an online poetry website community (www.allpoetry.com/Babaloo),  I immediately developed a passion for writing and learning about poetry and prose."  He became more and more fascinated with writing poetry, to the extent that he could not wait to wake up in the morning to write.

Prosper once said.... "Even though I am a physician, by passion, I consider myself a creative artist, but not necessarily a writer or poet. What inspires me are the things that bring me joy or pain---a colorful piece of art, tragedy, the earth and sky, a new friend."  In effect, Prosper's poetry depicts such varied themes as nature, love, justice, war and peace, death...all with great sensibility, depth, wit and humor.

In December 2010, he published his first poetry book entitled "Bewildered: Poetry of life, Love, and Nature", available at http://www.amazon.com/Bewildered-Poetry-Life-Love-Nature

A second book of Prosper's poetry will be published by his mother Maritza Sanchez soon.

Someone once tried  to describe Prosper with a single word.  He was such a multifaceted and special human being, that the task was impossible.  Prosper was simply special.

Prosper passed away peacefully, the same way he lived, on August 28, 2011.

He will leave forever in our hearts and memory.
