Jonathan Cook

Jonathan Cook writes supernatural mystery fiction set in the small towns and rolling bluffs of the upper Midwest, stories about old objects, inherited obligations, and the things people leave behind. His debut series, The Handler's Inventory, follows a burned-out paramedic who inherits his uncle's estate sale business and discovers that some of the inventory carries more than sentimental weight.

Jonathan is a photographer whose work in landscape, townscape, and astrophotography shapes the way he sees, and writes, the physical world. The same eye that finds composition in a limestone facade at dusk or a star field over open prairie is the eye behind Tom Salk's narration: grounded in texture, light, and the specific beauty of places that reward close attention.

He came to fiction in his fifties after years of creative silence, not from a lack of craft or things to say, but from the particular paralysis of knowing the work matters and not being able to reach it. When he finally found his way back, he discovered what Tom Salk discovers: that the skills and experiences he'd accumulated weren't spent. They were waiting for the right context.

He lives in Indiana, photographs the Midwest in all its seasons, and believes that old things, objects, buildings, towns, stories, deserve someone paying attention to what they hold.

The Handler's Inventory is a six-book series. Book 1, The Coffer Seal, is available now.
