STEVE J. SHERMAN is one of New York City’s premier performing arts photographers, widely recognized as the principal house photographer of Carnegie Hall since 1984 and one of the main New York Times music photographers from 1984 to 2000.
Sherman’s work has been featured in numerous national and international magazines and newspapers, on hundreds of album, CD, DVD and video covers for major recording companies worldwide, and his images have been prominently featured on many network and public television broadcasts, TV specials and news shows, as well as on/in hundreds of major books.
Sherman's first solo photography book "Leonard Bernstein At Work; His Final Years 1984 - 1990" (2010, Amadeus Press) featured all his own photography of The Maestro, and won critical acclaim. His second book, "Leonard Bernstein 100; The Masters Photograph The Maestro" (2018, powerHouse Books) celebrates Bernstein's centennial by showcasing the many great photographic masters who photographed Bernstein. Sherman has curated a unique collection of 100 iconic photographs that together tell Bernstein's life story through the lenses of such luminaries as Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Ken Heyman, Yousuf Karsh, Stanley Kubrick, Arnold Newman, Ruth Orkin, Gordon Parks, Irving Penn, andW. Eugene Smith, among so many others. Co-authored with Bernstein's daughter Jamie Bernstein.
Sherman’s highly praised solo exhibitions, as well as contributions to group exhibitions, have included such prominent locations as the International Center of Photography, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Lincoln Center Library of Performing Arts, The Carnegie Hall Museum, Harvard University and The Franklin Institute Science Museum.
