A modern languages graduate of St. John's College, Cambridge, David Sutcliffe taught for four years at Salem School in South Germany where he got to know Kurt Hahn well and met this wife Elisabeth. A member of the founding staff of Atlantic College in Wales in 1962, he came Head (1969-1982) before moving to Italy to become Founding Head of the United World College of the Adriatic. He also served as Vice-President of the International Baccalaureate Council of Foundation and Deputy Chairman of the IB Executive Committee (1985-1989) and Executive Director of United World Colleges International (1994-1998). After retirement in 2001 he was a co-founder of the United World College in Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and for several years Chairman of the Bosnian Foundation Education in Action. In 1976 he took part in the Observer Single-Handed Transatlantic race (OSTAR) in his 26-foot Contessa yacht The Lady Anne of St. Donat's. Granta Editions has published his account of the inshore rescue boat that was developed at Atlantic College (The RIB:The Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Lifeboat and its Place of Birth - the Atlantic College) and is now used worldwide.
