Born in Iowa City in 1976, Jeremy Brown studied East Asian Studies and Foreign Languages at Lewis & Clark College (BA, 1999) and received graduate degrees in modern Chinese history from the University of California, San Diego (MA, 2004; PhD, 2008), where he studied under Joseph Esherick and Paul Pickowicz. He is Professor of History at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. His research focuses on tracing the historical roots of pressing problems in China today, with a focus on how people in Chinese villages and cities have dealt with the traumas of accidents, revolution, state violence, and war.
