Kent D. Shifferd

Kent Shifferd is a lifelong environmental and peace activist. He holds a Ph.D. in history from Northern Illinois University for a disertation on "The Origins of Modern Environmental Thought." He taught for many years at Northland College where he created courses in environmental history and environmental ethics, andl founded and directed the Peace Studies program. He has held visiting appointments at Ripon College, the University of Wisconsin, and United Theological Seminary. He was one of the founders of the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies, a twenty-one campus consortium, and served several terms as its Executive Director. He was part of the team of scholars who created the award-winning Annenberg-CPB, distance learning course, Dilemmas Of War And Peace, broadcast on Wisconsin Public Radio. He left teaching in 1999 to devote his time to writing about the environmental crisis, war and peace, and religion. He is the editor/publisher of a free, monthly e-newsletter, the Creation Care Newsletter. He is co-author of A Global Security System. He also writes plays and poetry.

Kent Shifferd lives with his wife, Dr. Patricia Shifferd, and their Westie "Maggie" on Middle Twin Lake in northern Wisconsin. He likes old airplanes, bluegill fishing, and traveling in Europe, gardening and playing the piano. He is currently working on a new book to be titled "Betraying Jesus: Christian Violence and Violent Christians."
