I was born in Belle Harbor, New York and have been a writer all my life. Even as a teenager I loved writing and directing plays for kids. When I was forced to grow up I spent four years at CBS news and public affairs working for Eric Sevareid. Then I went to work for the U.S. State Department as a foreign service officer at embassies and USAID missions in Europe, Africa, the Far East and Southeast Asia. I didn’t know it then, but my travels were the beginning of the never ending journey to self-realization.
As described in my article “The Eternal Search for Who Am I?” featured in New Age Journal, my journey took me to a frozen Himalayan mountainside where for one brief moment a stranger opened a portal to an indescribable spiritual experience, only to have it close for a very long time. My journey took me to numerous spiritual masters, all of whom brought me one step closer to the realization that “God Dwells Within You As You.” I talk about it quite a lot on my website "Writing For The New Consciousness," www.susanscharfman.com.
My years in Japan were the inspiration for my novel "The Sword and The Chrysanthemum, Journey of the Heart."
