Eliot Bates is a scholar specializing in music's material cultures, having written extensively about recording studio gear, modular synthesizers, the Turkish saz, vinyl records, and music's contribution to the anthropocene. Bates is Associate Professor and Director of the Ethnomusicology Program at the CUNY Graduate Center, having previously been on the faculty the University of Birmingham (UK), at the University of Maryland College Park, and an ACLS New Faculty Fellow at Cornell University’s Society for the Humanities. In addition to their books and articles, Bates is a prolific recording artist.
