Meet Micki Bare
Micki Bare spent her childhood in the mountains of northern New Jersey where her father instilled a love for hiking. Her passion for writing began at the age of four when she and her cousin in New York became pen pals. Her second grade teacher not only let her write when she finished her work early, but also helped her parents find a collegiate thesaurus, which became her most cherished Christmas gift of all time.
As a teen, she was transplanted into the South when her dad’s company moved the family to Raleigh, NC. It was there that she finished high school and attended college. She is a graduate of NC State University.
While working full time and raising a family, Micki published three early-reader chapter books and had stories published in two anthologies. She wrote a weekly human-interest column for 18 years and had articles published in Thrive Magazine, Piedmont Parent, and Our State. She’s an active member of SCBWI-Carolinas.
She spent much of her career in the early childhood field with service as a teacher, administrator, and marketing director. She loves to cook, garden, and hike; hobbies her three sons also share. She also dabbles in local theater, having portrayed Edna Edison in a community theater production of Neil Simon’s "The Prisoner of Second Avenue." She also participates in annual staged readings of Charles Dickens’ "A Christmas Carol," directed a community theater production of Ted Swindley’s "Always … Patsy Cline," and played Leaf’s mom in Rachel Sheinkin’s "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" (her Hubby played Leaf’s dad in the same production).
In 2021, she signed a five-book deal with Level Best Books (LevelBestBooks.us) to become the first author under its new Level Elevate imprint for middle grade and young adult works. The first book in the Zahra of the Uwharries series, Society of the Sentinelia, was published May, 2022. It earned the 2022 AAUW NC Young People's Literature Award. It was also named a long list nominee for the 2023 Green Earth Book Award. The second book in the series, Blind Fairy, was published May 2023.
