I was born in St. Charles, Mo.; attended Immanuel Lutheran School and St. Charles High School; earned my BS degree in Computer Science (CS) from Missouri Univ. of Science and Technology (MST), graduating first in my class; earned my MS degree in CS from MST, having been awarded a NSF Fellowship; and earned my PhD in CS from Florida State Univ.
I worked for 12 years for Burroughs (now Unisys) Corp. doing R&D in database management systems and user interfaces. I was awarded an Employee Exemplary Action Award for designing a menu-based operator's interface for Unisys large mainframe computers.
I was a CS professor for 30 years at Chapman Univ., Florida A&M Univ., and Southern Illinois Univ. Edwardsville. I taught courses and did research in programming, database management, software engineering, user interfaces, discrete math, and computer theory and published 32 peer-reviewed CS articles and a book on database development. I retired in early 2012.
In retirement, my main “hobby” has been investigating, pondering, and writing about the Big Questions— shifting my focus from CS to psychology, philosophy, and religion. I’m married with two children and two step-children.
