Leonard Bond

Leonard J. Bond, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Dr Bond has more than 35 years experience in research and development in academia, government laboratories, and the private sector. He joined Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in 1998 and is a Laboratory Fellow. He holds a PhD in Physics from The City University, London. The use of both low and high power ultrasonics has been a theme throughout his career including its application to NDE, novel measurements and characterization of aging and degradation in defense systems and energy infrastructure.

Dr Bond started his career with British Gas. After a UK Ministry of Defense funded Post-doc he became a member of faculty at University College London (UCL), University of London where he developed a research group focused on QNDE. In recognition of his contribution to the field he was promoted by the University of London to “Reader in Ultrasonics.” He moved to the United States in 1990, and initially worked at NIST in Boulder, CO. He subsequently held Research Professorships with both the University of Colorado at Boulder and University of Denver.

Dr Bond’s current activities are focused on advanced diagnostics/prognostics applied to light water nuclear power plant reactor sustainability and ultrasonic measurements in hostile environments, including for well logging and in sodium fast reactors. He has given numerous talks at conferences including the keynote presentations at the ASME PVP Meeting, Seattle, July 2010 and IAEA PLiM meeting, Shanghai, China October 2007. He is author or co-author of more than 250 publications, including book chapters, monographs and more than 55 in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is also author of more than 60 major reports, and he holds 10 patents. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK), a Senior Member of the IEEE and in 2009-10 was a member of the IEEE Board of Directors. He is a member of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the American Nuclear Society (ANS), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the IET (formerly IEE) and holds both C.Eng. and C.Phys.
