He got introduced to Buddhism through a book by Oldenberg and the translations of Karl Eugen Neumann. When he noticed how different these two translated Pali texts, it forced him to learn Pali himself and he became a "master of Pali". In 1917, he was asked to give a lecture at the Munich to talk about Buddhism. The result of this was the first of his 15 books. Later, he translated the entire Middle collection (Majjhima Nikaya) in a new abbreviated form.
