Matthew West

Matthew West was born in 1953 in Harrow, England. He was educated at the University of Leeds taking a BSc and PhD in Chemical Engineering. He joined Shell in 1978 and worked for them for 30 years. Initially he worked at Shell Haven Refinery, exploiting the interest he gained in computing during his time at Leeds. Since 1987 he worked on the computing/business interface with a particular interest in information management, information quality, master and reference data, data modelling and ontology, and has contributed to a number of International Standards including ISO 15926 and ISO 8000.

Matthew has also been a Visiting Professor in the Keyworth Institute at the University of Leeds, and author of "Developing High Quality Data Models". He was awarded an OBE for services to information management in the 2020 New Year's Honours list.

Matthew day sailed his trimaran Wandering Glider, a Dragonfly 920 Extreme, round the British mainland, and is currently sailing Backlash, a bridgehead catamaran.
