I have been working as a psychiatrist for over a decade with a focus on trauma and the personal transformation that may come of it when we choose to not remain a victim.
I’ve always been interested in taking Psychiatry to the streets, that is, getting out of the small office in which I do my work, and helping educate and de-stigmatize about mental health topics out in the larger world.
As a radio co-host on Mornings with Poorman and Dr. Alicia, a call in daily radio show which I did during my residency in LA, I first began to understand how many people were suffering in silence, needing support and information, going it alone – and what an amazing opportunity to reach people the media afforded.
Years later, as the Director of After-Care for The Montel Williams Show, I appeared in over 100 episodes as the shows on-air trauma expert.
Survivors are a tender tribe, in need of solidarity and support. My goal has always been to fuse a blend of Education, Inspiration and Motivation for change. I’m all about building a sense of “Survivor Pride”, that sense of dignity, resilience and empowerment that comes from knowing you have overcome.
Rather than trying to erase our life’s worst moments, my approach embraces them as a source of strength and a springboard for living in vivid color. I believe that it is possible to heal stronger than ever. I believe life is waiting for you. And that we may be better suited to live vibrantly and gratefully alive, not in spite of, but because of what we have overcome.
