Tom Mooradian

Tom Mooradian, a Detroit native, was just nineteen when he left the comfort of postwar America to join the 1947 repatriation movement to Soviet Armenia. Expecting to reconnect with his ancestral homeland, he instead found himself trapped behind the Iron Curtain during the rule of Joseph Stalin. For thirteen years, Mooradian lived, studied, and played basketball in the USSR, becoming the only American to compete in the Soviet Basketball League. After his eventual return to the United States, he built a distinguished career as a journalist and writer, known for his clear voice and firsthand perspective on politics and culture. His memoir, The Repatriate, offers a rare account of life under Stalin, the challenges of identity and belonging, and the endurance of the human spirit.
