John G. Culhane

I'm a law professor and a political and social commentator. I write about family law, LGBTQ and women's rights, public health and inequality, compensating victims of disaster, the First Amendment, gun violence, tort law, abortion, and other topics too numerous to mention here. In addition to some 40 law review articles and several books and book chapters, I'm a regular contributor to both Slate and Politico, and my writing has also been featured in many publications, ranging from the New York Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer to Dissent Magazine and the Philly City Paper. I've been interviewed by many visual and print media, including NPR, MSNBC, NBC and CBS News, and the Michael Smerconish Show. I was featured in a documentary film about Hurricane Katrina and how our response to that disaster compares unfavorably to how we handled the events of September 11. The movie is called "America Betrayed" and was narrated by Richard Dreyfuss.

My latest book, More Than Marriage: Forming Families After Marriage Equality, considers how the law supports -- and fails to support -- adults in committed relationships other than marriage. The narrative spine of the book is the stories of some of the actual couples in various relationships -- only some of which are legally recognized -- and how the law might be reformed to improve their lives and those of so many millions of others who are in a similarly murky legal status. I wrote it for a general audience.

I teach in many different areas, including Torts, Constitutional Law, Family Law, and Public Health Law, and have won the Outstanding Faculty award thrice (that's three times, for the non-Elizabethans out there). I have the titles of Distinguished Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Family Health Law & Policy Institute at Delaware Law School, and have been a Visiting Professor at Temple University's Beasley School of Law since 2019. I also teach a Shakespeare and the Law course at Drexel University -- just because I love it!

When I'm not writing, I'm being husband and dad (to college-age twin girls) or playing tennis, swimming, reading, or socializing.
