Karla Lehmann

Karla Lehmann enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for life and travel via her stories, songs and photographs. Through the eyes of Rita the Bird Dog, Karla's science and nature books teach pre-school and early-elementary-age children about nature, history, plants, animals, and culture in the Sonoran Desert, the Great Plains and Tallgrass Prairie, and the Rocky Mountains. The Rita the Bird Dog character is a commemorative to Karla Lehmann's pet Weimaraner of 16 years, Rita, who loved nature of all kinds.

Karla was born in Oklahoma, grew up in southern Arizona, and spent many years in New Mexico. She has always had a keen interest in her Cherokee heritage, as well as other Native American cultures and hispanic history and influence in the southwestern United States. Her career and passion for travel, have taken her around the globe. Marrying into a German family, and raising a German/English bilingual child, have integrated language and culture into all aspects of daily life. Karla has incorporated English, German, and Spanish vocabulary into all of her science and nature books.

In addition to being an active member of a preschool board, Karla is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and the Arizona Authors Association. She has a bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona and a master's certificate from George Washington University.
