Daniel A. Salomon

Daniel Salomon (1979) is a Ph.D. Student in Urban Studies at Portland State University (PSU). Salomon's research specializations include Environment and Critical Disability. The purpose of Salomon's research is exploring Critical Disability/Critical Autism, Environmental Studies and Green Spaces in the Urban Context. Salomon in 2022, co-authored with Minji Cho, Ph.D. Student in the Toulon School of Urban Studies and Planning at PSU, "Ableism in Communicative Planning: An Autistic Perspective" in Planning Theory & Practice. The entire March 2022 issue was devoted to "Disability Justice and Urban Planning." Salomon also led a Breakfast Panel discussion at the 2022 Urban Affairs Association (UAA) conference in Nashville TN on "Disability/Neurodivergence/Autistic Justice and Urban Planning."

Also in 2022, Salomon's chapter, "Getting to Solidarity: Toward an Interested-based Conflict Resolution Approach to Resolving the Conflict between Ecoability Equity and Animal Equity" was published in "Vegans on Speciesism and Ableism: Ecoability Voices for Disability and Animal Justice" ed. by Anthony Nocella and Amber George, Vol. 9 in the Radical Animal Studies and Total Liberation Series.

In the Summer of 2022, Salomon traveled to Costa Rica for a faculty-led study abroad course offered through PSU.

Salomon has a Master of Arts in Theological Research from Andover Newton Theological School (Andover Newton at Yale Divinity School) along with a Graduate Certificate in Science and Religion from the Boston Theological Institute. Salomon also holds a BS Cum Laude in Liberal Studies from Salisbury University, in Maryland, with concentrations in Biology, Environmental Studies, and Conflict Analysis/Dispute Resolution, as well as a Naturalist Certificate from the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies. Salomon is author of seven books on the environment (five of them available on Amazon) and has published in Christians for the Mountains, Catholic Sentinel, NW Examiner, The Journal of Critical Animal Studies, The Scavenger, The Society for Disability Studies and Hoyt Arboretum in Portland, Oregon.

Christian environmental activist, Allen Johnson, one of Salomon's mentors wrote in the Fall 2021 Issue (Volume 8, NO. 16) of his publication focusing on environmental justice concerns in West Virginia, "Christians for the Mountains," a systematic literature review of Salomon's self-published works, "Reviewing Books of Daniel Salomon: Christian Neurodiverse Environmentalist."

September 4th 2019, in the anthology, Intersectionality in Critical Animal Studies: A Historical Collection ed. by Anthony Nocella and Amber E. George (Peter Lang Inc.), Salomon's 2010 Journal of Critical Animal Studies article, "From Marginal Cases to Linked Oppressions: Reframing the Conflict between the Autistic Pride and Animal Rights Movements" was re-published as "Chapter Four" under "Part II: Disability."

Salomon is also a twice contributor in the anthology, "Animals, Disability, and the End of Capitalism: Voices from the Eco-ability Movement (Radical Animal Studies and Total Liberation) ed. by John Lupinacci, Anthony J. Salomon was a Presenter with Power Point at the 2020 Zoom Critical Animal Studies conference. Salomon presented, "Getting to Solidarity: Toward An Interest-Based Conflict Resolution Approach to Resolving The Conflict between Eco-Ability Equity and Animal Equity" which is based on a chapter which will be part of another upcoming ICAS anthology on eco-ability which ICAS plans to release in 2022. Salomon was also made a Student Critical Animal Studies scholar by ICAS in the Fall of 2020.

Salomon also was a Presenter with Power Point at the Institute for Critical Animal Studies (ICAS) 6th Annual Eco-ability Conference on Zoom, Summer 2020.

Salomon's previously published poem "Sermon to the Flowers of the Field" in 2000 for the Scarab, a poetry anthology of Salisbury University while an undergraduate student was re-published Summer 2020 in "The Mountain Vision," Christians For The Mountains, Dunmore, West Virginia.

Salomon's latest Amazon book "God's Kindness" which he released on October 4th 2019, the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi (The Catholic Patron Saint of Animals and Ecology) was reviewed by Ed Langlois in the December 6, 2019 issue of the Catholic Sentinel which serves the Portland Oregon Archdioceses under 2019 Book Reviews (13).

Salomon was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church on Easter Eve 2016. Salomon is a lector and on the liturgical environment committee in his local parish. Salomon is also a greeter and an usher in his local parish. Salomon is an active participant in two faith sharing groups in his local parish including a faith sharing group which focuses on peace and justice issues. Salomon's (2010) Journal of Critical Animal Studies article "From marginal cases to linked oppressions: Reframing the conflict between the autistic pride and animal rights movements" was also quoted in Sunaura Taylor's 2017 book which received an endorsement from Bill McKibben and others in the field.

Salomon was one of the invited storytellers at Portland's 25 Anniversary of the Americans for Disabilities Act (ADA) sponsored by the Portland Disability Commission and Office of Equity and Human Rights. Salomon was interviewed by Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) reporter Amelia Templeton and featured in her broadcast "Portland Celebrates Key Disability Rights Law With An Open Mic" on July 24, 2015. His interview was also re-published in the Inquisitr on July 26, 2015.

Salomon was a presenter at the panel discussion on "Disability and Animals" at the 2012 Society for Disability Studies Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado, in 2013 in Orlando and 2014 in Minneapolis.

In 2015, Salomon was invited to be a guest speaker at the 2015 Wilderness International Creation-Care Conference at Eastridge Covenant Church in Clackamas, Oregon where he gave a presentation on Douglas Firs, what Douglas Firs teach-us about God and God's Creation, and how to be good stewards of God's Douglas Firs as Christians environmentalists.

In 2014, Salomon received an honorarium from George Fox University in Newberg, OR for being invited to be a seminary class speaker in Dr. Dan Brunner's Christian Earthkeeping Class where Salomon facilitated a discussion based on his various books.

Salomon in 2013 relocated cross-country to Portland, Oregon where he lives in a multi-income, multi-dwelling green building in the Goose Hollow neighborhood, with his animal companion Cora-the-cat, to be closer to the epicenter of the environmental and /animal movements. Salomon remains a life-long committed vegetarian.
