Jochen A. Werner

Prof. Dr. Jochen A. Werner, born in Flensburg in 1958, studied medicine in Kiel, Germany, where he underwent further training as an ENT specialist and was appointed to the Chair of the Dept. of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the Philipps University of Marburg at the age of 39. He was one of the most internationally renowned cancer specialists in his field. Following his appointment as Medical Director of Marburg University Hospital in 2010, Werner moved to the management of University Hospital Gießen and Marburg GmbH. Five years later, Werner was appointed Chairman of the Executive Board of University Hospital Essen and is still driving the transformation towards future-proof healthcare today. The "Smart Hospital" concept is inextricably linked to him. Werner sees digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) as the key instruments for better, more sustainable and more humane medicine. Werner is fully committed to shifting the previous focus on repair medicine towards prevention, i.e. disease avoidance, and encouraging people to take control of their own health. Werner sees the longevity megatrend as a great opportunity to usher in the next stage of development in medicine, based on data and AI. With the aim of accelerating digitalization in the healthcare sector, Werner and two colleagues founded the company 10xD, an ecosystem for digital healthcare. The award-winning doctor, author and speaker is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
