Folko Kullmann

Folko Kullmann has been fascinated by plants since childhood, so it was no surprise that he turned his hobby into a profession and studied horticultural science at Weihenstephan near Munich in Germany. After spending time in Bad Zwischenahn at Bruns Pflanzen, Europe's largest nursery, in London at Kew Botanical Gardens, and graduating with a degree in horticulture, he spent a further three and a half years working and researching on the development of peat substitutes and mycorrhizal fungi at the Chair of Vegetable Cultivation at the Technical University of Munich.

After a traineeship at the Stuttgart-based Kosmos publishing house, he set up his own business in the "green publishing industry" as an editor, author, translator and developer of gardening books. He is also the responsible editor of "Staudengarten", the members' magazine of the Gesellschaft der Staudenfreunde e.V. (Society of Friends of Perennials) and since 2016 has been president of the society, which with more than 5,000 members is one of the largest plant-loving societies in Europe.

From 2018 until 2022 Folko was editor-in-chief of Gartenpraxis, a renowned plant magazine published by Verlag Eugen Ulmer in Stuttgart. Today he works as editior for Gräfe und Unzer, a leading publisher of illustrated reference books in Munich.

"Square Foot Gardening", published by BLV Verlag, was awarded in 2014 at the German Gardening Book Prize in the category "Illustrated Reference Books", as was "Gärtnern mit dem Hochbeet", published by GU, which received the coveted prize in 2015.
