My number one tip for learning WordPress:

Don't worry about figuring out all the things WordPress can do. Think about what your visitors need and then learn the functions in WordPress that will help you achieve that.

In fact, I recommend learning any piece of software that way. Master what you need, rather than being a slave to all the details.
