Mari Howard

In her family-based fiction, The Mullins Family Saga, Mari Howard uses her background in social sciences and religion to explore diversity, conflict and resolution, decision-making, falling in love, becoming parents, combining careers and small children, being a teenager. Her latest publication, due out 14 February 2022, is 'Life in Art and Practice', a collection of mini short stories — writings from the 1990s re-discovered in lockdown, and described by an early reader as 'observational tales about the human condition, ... with the visual acuity of a painter and the insight of a sociologist.'

She also writes blogposts, has published a book of poetry, and is a painter.

Mari's interests and influences include a wide variety of reading, including Barbara Kingsolver, Kamila Shamsie, Khalid Hosseini, Sarah Moss, and lately, Sally Rooney. Like Shamsie, Kingsolver, Hosseini and Rooney, she observes and critiques her own culture, its traditions, and social change. She also reads, for relaxation, Joanna Trollope, and books by writer friends such as Fiona Veitch Smith (the Poppy Denby series) and Debbie Young (Sophie Sayers cosy mysteries).

Her first novel, Baby, Baby, (set in the 1980s and based around the developing science of IVF) was listed for the People’s Book Prize. She has appeared at the Hawkesbury Upton Literary Festival (founded by writer Debbie Young).

Mari has 3 grown children, 2 grandkids, a cat and a long-suffering husband. She’s a member of the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi), and enjoys painting, photography, friendships, gardening, and being outdoors..
