Bruce Smith is an American wildlife biologist who holds a doctorate degree in Zoology. Besides writing for numerous periodicals, he’s an award-winning author of five nonfiction books of science, natural history, and outdoor adventure. Among them are the Montana Book Award honored Where Elk Roam, and Life on the Rocks: A Portrait of the American Mountain Goat which won the National Outdoor Book Award.
Drawing on his experiences studying wild animals in the American West, he also writes novels with environmental themes that immerse young readers in the natural world. Winner of two Feathered Quill book awards, Legend Keepers: The Chosen One (2021) is the first book in his middle-grade adventure series. The awarding second (2022) and third (2024) books in the Legend Keepers series follow a young mountain goat and a shy 12-year-old boy who share a common goal to protect Shining Mountain from the warming climate.
Bruce and his wife Diana live in southwest Montana, not far from mountain goats, where he continues his conservation work and writing.
