Janet M. Cromer

Janet M. Cromer is a psychiatric RN. licensed psychotherapist, educator, and freelance healthcare writer. Her proudest accomplishment was sharing life with her husband Alan for twenty years.

Janet first book, Professor Cromer Learns to Read: A Couple's New Life after Brain Injury is the recent recipient of a Solimene Award for Excellence in Medical Communication and a Neal Duane Award for Distinction from the American Medical Writers Association-NE Chapter.

Janet's fourth grade career ambition was to write the "Human Interest Story" column for The Boston Globe when she grew up. They really had a column with that title back then, and she raced to read it even before the comics. Instead of being a writer, Janet got involved with many people during their toughest, proudest, and most dramatic times of life during many years as a medical nurse and then a psychiatric nurse in hospitals and community programs. The mysteries and wonders of the human condition continue to energize her life and writing.

Janet loves everything about books-their heft, choreography of words on the page, smell of paper, and the satisfaction of scribbling in the margins and underlininng the best phrases. She took that passion a step further when she got into book binding and making artist's book five years ago. She thrives on creating the perfect combination of raucous colors and gorgeous textures with papers from all over the world.

Janet speaks widely on issues related to brain injury, family caregiving, and the medical humanities. She enjoys engaging with people at conferences, hospitals, book clubs, colleges, and community events.

A lifelong resident of Boston, MA, Janet now lives in Bethesda, MD
