JOY BILLINGTON is a Washington writer who covered the White House for the Washington Star over five administrations. She was ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT'S Washington reporter and also covered the Reagan administration for the San Diego Union after the demise of the Star in 1981. About the book, FROM ROME TO CANTERBURY, REV.JOSEPH DOTY and his wife JOY BILLINGTON were together for 35 years after he left the Jesuit Order and his position as headmaster of Georgetown Prep for the Episcopal Church and marriage, in a flourish of publicity. After his sudden death in 2003, the projects that distracted her from grieving were answering the hundreds of letters from his past pupils and admirers, and writing this biography. She had his hand written chapters to transcribe onto the computer - the years of his youth, his early years as a Jesuit and his struggles with celibacy -- for the first verbatim section.. She wrote the second part, about their marriage and their love.
In her latest book MORE TALES FROM THE TYPEWRITER the stories vary from an amusing tale called "French Summer School", a surprising account called "$!0,000 to Kill Patton", a tale from North Borneo called "Sheila's Mountain", and the amusing "Bad Night in Casa" where she was entertained by a Moroccan princess and duped into spending the night with a gay courtier.
