Jeff Conant

Jeff Conant's non-fiction and educational writing focuses on the intersection of social justice, development, communications, and ecology. Writing A Community Guide to Environmental Health (Hesperian Foundation, 2008), involved most of a decade collaborating with grassroots development initiatives in many countries to develop popular education materials addressed to the needs of under-resourced communities.

A Poetics of Resistance: the Revolutionary Public Relations of the Zapatista Insurgency (AK Press, 2010) examines the cultural politics of the Zapatista movement of Chiapas, Mexico, where Conant worked for several years. The book focuses on the Zapatistas' persuasive use of symbolic language and colorful imagery to bring their struggle to the world's attention.

As an independent journalist he has written on climate, water privatization, resource colonization, food sovereignty, ecological sanitation, zero waste, environmental and social justice, and cultural politics for numerous publications; he won a Project Censored Award in 2010 for coverage of the World Water Forum in Istanbul, Turkey.

Conant writes fiction and poetry as well, with three as-yet-unpublished novels and a few small rare editions of poetry published on small presses.
