Readers have praised Neva's writing for its evocative sense of place, gentle style, and delicately drawn characters. Mountains serve as her inspiration in much of her writing. She describes her work as earthy and sensuous. It honors the region’s landscape while it explores love and desire, childhood and aging, heartache and joy, religion and spirituality, and environmental stewardship.
Neva is the author of the novels Riverswept and St. Peter's Monsters, and she has published a collection of short stories and poems called Sawmill Boys.
She is a contributor to the Anthology of Appalachian Writers—Wiley Cash edition (Shepherd University, 2018) and the anthology We All Live Downstream: Writings about mountaintop removal (Motes Books, 2009).
Nearly fifty of her poems and short stories are published in literary journals and online magazines. Her short fiction and poetry have won numerous awards and prizes.
She lives in the mountains of southwestern Virginia with her husband and their dogs.
