Quincy D. Newell

Quincy D. Newell is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Hamilton College. A native of Oregon, Newell is widely recognized as an expert on religion in the American West. She is particularly interested in the experiences of religious and racial/ethnic minorities in the nineteenth-century West, and has published several books and essays on this subject. Her work has been supported by fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Louisville Institute, among other organizations. Most recently, Newell received the 2018 Jane Dempsey Douglass Prize from the American Society of Church History and the 2017 Best Article in Mormon Women’s History prize from the Mormon History Association for her work on Jane James, an African American woman who converted to Mormonism in the early 1840s.
