Kate Clow

I was born in the UK but moved to Turkey in 1989 to work on computer projects. After a few years working on government projects, I moved to Antalya and started to investigate the old road system in the Taurus mountains. Eventually, I decided to join some of the old roads in a network which became the Lycian Way, Turkey's first long-dstance walking route - it was opened in 1999.

With Terry Richardson's help, the St Paul Trail followed in 2004 and the Kaçkar routes in 2008. I helped Caroline Finkel with the Evliya Çelebi Way in 2011.

Now I am chairman of the Culture Routes Society, which supports other trail makers and acts as a liason with the government, the Institute of Cultural Routes in Europe, the World Trails Network and our trail users. The aims of the society are to:

- put old roads under conservation and protect them

- help villagers along our routes make an income from providing services for trekkers and visitors

- with various travel agency members, publicise and market our routes.

Check out the society on www.cultureroutesinturkey.com, and, if you pass through Antalya, please call in.
