As the Principal Lecturer in Policing at Teesside University, Ian manages and teaches on a range of specialist programmes in partnership with law enforcement and Criminal Justice organisations. He is a former Senior Lecturer in Crime Scene and Forensic Science, police Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) and fingerprint officer. As an operational CSI Ian has investigated over 9,000 crime scenes ranging from complex multiple homicides to incidents of burglary and theft.
Ian has been a team leader and instructor at the National Training Centre for Scientific Support to Crime Investigation and has designed and delivered education and training to Crime Scene Investigators and Police Officers in the Far East, Middle East, Africa and across the UK. Ian has also presented papers at conferences in the UK, USA and Canada. He is a member of the International Association for Identification, the Fingerprint Society and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
