I qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist in 1987 and spent thirteen years in clinical practice specialising in rheumatology and orthopaedics. In 1997, I joined the University of Salford, Manchester, where I have lectured for over two decades. My teaching and research interests focus on patient assessment and management, ethics, and the physiotherapy management of rheumatology and orthopaedic conditions. I currently lecture in areas such as patient care, anatomy, orthopaedics, research methods, and professional ethics, and I have had the privilege of supporting new undergraduate students as Year 1 Manager since 1998.
Between 1990 and 1993, I served as Physiotherapist to the Women’s Football Squad, and in 2009, I became the first recipient of the University of Salford’s Teaching Excellence Award. Alongside my work at Salford, I lectured at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, from 2025 to 2019 where I was Medical Director of the Medical Summer Programme for visiting students from Nanjing, China.
I am the author of ten textbooks, which have now been translated into eleven languages. These include a core reference text, a physiotherapy dictionary, and books on research methods, psychology in physiotherapy, and soft tissue injury management. I also work as a publishing consultant for Elsevier Publishers in Oxford.
My doctoral research examined exercise behaviour in rheumatology, with a focus on Ankylosing Spondylitis, a seronegative inflammatory spinal condition. I am a Visiting Lecturer at Universidade Paulista in São Paulo, Brazil, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Over the years, I have served as an external examiner for physiotherapy programmes at the University of East London, the University of Bradford, and the University of Liverpool, for the PGDip/MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy. I am also involved in mentoring and assessing new academics undertaking PgCAP qualifications.
In addition, I am a registered Expert Witness with the Medico-Legal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists, contributing my clinical and academic expertise to medico-legal practice.
