Lineu Castello

Lineu Castello was born and raised in Brazil. He received a bachelor's degree in Architecture and a specialist's degree in Urbanism from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). He has taught Architecture and Urbanism at that University, from which he is now retired, though still serving as Invited Professor. At UFRGS, he also served as Director of the Faculty of Architecture; Coordinator of the Post-graduate Urban and Regional Planning Program (PROPUR); and Head of the Department of Urbanism. He was awarded a Doctor of Architecture degree from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil); a Master of Philosophy degree in Urban Design and Regional Planning from Edinburgh University (United Kingdom), and attended graduate studies at the Development Planning Unit, University College London (UK). He received the Gerd Albers Award from ISOCARP-The International Society of City and Regional Planners (Holland, 2007), for his article "There's No Reality Like Hyper-Reality"; published the books "A Percepção de lugar. Repensando o Conceito de Lugar em Arquitetura-Urbanismo"(Porto Alegre, Brazil: PROPAR); "Rethinking the Meaning of Place. Conceiving Place in Architecture-Urbanism" (London: Ashgate); and was Consultant Editor for "The Encyclopedia of the City", edited by Roger Caves (New York: Routledge) and author of six Entries in that encyclopedia (Brownfields; Cultural Identity; Environmental Perception; Main Streets; Meta Urbanism; Place); author of the chapter 'Redesigning Brownfields in Porto Alegre' in Del Rio, V. & Siembieda, W., "Contemporary Urbanism in Brazil" (Gainesville: University Press of Florida); 'The Multiple Roles of a "Starchitecture" Museum' in "The International Journal of the Inclusive Museum" (Melbourne: Common Ground); 'Places à la Carte: The Packaging of Places and Urban Tourism' in Moustafa, A. et al. He is presently engaged on the project research "The state-of-the art in Urbanism and a network of places for Porto Alegre", with a grant from Brazilian National Research Council.
