In presenting an outline of the chief events connected with the disaster in the Wellington Pit, I may say a word as to the object, I have in view, in writing it. My desire is to compile an account which shall be in form, convenient for reference, and for preservation; which also the infant children of the deceased miners may hereafter be able to obtain and read, when they come to years of discretion. I trust that the facts recorded here show them that the calamity, which made them fatherless, stirred profoundly the British people, from the King on his throne, to the humblest toilers in the Empire; and that liberal help was forthcoming, from all parts of the globe, to the bereaved homes in Whitehaven. It will also, I trust make it plain to them that their fathers died "doing their duty, serving their fellows" and that in their death they were respected and lamented.
