David McAlpine Cunningham has written two well-received novels for teenage readers: "CloudWorld" (Faber & Faber), which was nominated for the Manchester Book Award, and "CloudWorld At War." The CloudWorld story has been acclaimed as "bold and original” by Stuart Kelly (Literary Editor of “The Scotsman”) and “a heart-pumping tale set in a vividly-imagined world" by the Oscar-nominated screenwriter William Nicholson ("Shadowlands", "Gladiator.")
David was born in Ayrshire and educated at Glasgow University, from which he has an M.A. in English Literature and a Ph.D. in Scottish Literature. His short stories have appeared in various magazines and anthologies and have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4. He has also written and reviewed for the Scotsman, the Herald, the New Statesman, the Spectator, the Scottish Review of Books and the British Council. He has worked at various times as a Bookseller, a Web Content Developer and as an Administrator at the Universities of Edinburgh and Bath. He now works at Strathclyde University. His most recently published fiction, a novel extract entitled “Time and a Half", appeared in the London Magazine in September 2023.
