Brian Mountford

Brian grew up in London, studied theology in Newcastle and Cambridge, before being ordained into the Church of England at St Paul's Cathedral in 1968. He was Fellow and Chaplain of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge in the 70's and Vicar of Southgate in North London until moving to Oxford in 1986. He retired as Vicar of the University Church in 2016. Since then he has worked periodically as Chaplain of St Hilda's College, Oxford, Acting Chaplain of Corpus Christ College, Oxford, and at the Berkshire Independent School, Wellington College.

Brian's autobiography, 'Church Going Gone', is a risk-taking page turner. Philip Pullman wrote: 'All his qualities are vividly present in this book, as well as a lively gift for scene-setting and character-drawing'.

His best selling 'Christian Atheist' discusses the difficulties of believing ancient metaphysical claims in the contemporary world. 'Religion and Generation Z - why 70% of 18-24-year-olds say they have no religion' (2022) is a collection of essays by Oxford students. 'Friday's Child' is a collection of poems about suffering and redemption with a challenging commentary on each.
